Kitchen

This small open-plan kitchen occupied a generous footprint yet offered surprisingly little storage. However, it also benefited from some of the best natural light in the home. To make better use of both space and light, we closed off an existing doorway and removed part of the adjoining wall. A hidden beam was installed to maintain structure while allowing the space to open up fully.

This approach transformed the kitchen into a functional gallery layout, with a new island opening directly to the lounge. The island now provides an alternative seating area, while keeping the kitchen connected to the living space rather than closing it off. As a result, the new layout allows natural light to flow freely between both rooms.

To unify the newly open-plan area, we repainted the entire space and introduced timber flooring through the kitchen, while new carpet was laid in the lounge. By reconfiguring the kitchen layout, we gained additional space, which allowed us to incorporate a compact laundry area at the end of the room — a practical addition that had previously not been possible.

All electrical systems were upgraded to ensure the home was safe and future-proof. As the fuse board could not be relocated, we designed a removable artwork solution to conceal it, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the space without compromising accessibility.

The result is a lounge and kitchen that feels noticeably larger, brighter, and far more functional. Thoughtful design details, including graphic wallpaper for pattern and black task wall lighting, add depth and personality, creating a smart, interesting, and highly practical renovation.
